New York, January 23, 2025 — The United Nations Security Council convened its 9845th meeting to discuss the ongoing cooperation between the United Nations (UN) and the League of Arab States (LAS) in maintaining international peace and security. The meeting highlighted the growing collaboration between the two organizations in addressing regional and global challenges.
During the session, representatives from member states emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships to address conflicts, humanitarian crises, and development challenges in the Arab world. The meeting underscored the need for coordinated actions in resolving longstanding conflicts and supporting peacebuilding initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of Somalia, Deputy Permanent Representative Mohamed Yusuf Rabic delivered a statement commending the collaboration between the UN and the LAS. He stressed that such partnerships are vital for addressing complex issues in the Horn of Africa and the broader Arab region.
“Somalia appreciates the joint efforts of the UN and the League of Arab States in promoting stability and addressing security concerns,” said Rabic. “As a country that has faced decades of conflict, we understand the critical role that regional organizations can play in complementing international efforts.”
Rabic also highlighted the importance of supporting nations recovering from conflict. He urged both organizations to enhance their focus on capacity building, economic development, and addressing the root causes of instability. “For sustainable peace, we must prioritize investments in education, job creation, and infrastructure development. These are the building blocks of a resilient society,” he added.
Several Security Council members echoed Rabic’s sentiments, emphasizing that cooperation between the UN and the LAS is essential for tackling shared challenges such as terrorism, climate change, and migration. They called for enhanced communication and joint planning to ensure the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions and humanitarian interventions in Arab states.
The Secretary-General’s report on UN-Arab League cooperation was also discussed. The report highlighted joint initiatives in Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan, demonstrating the impact of collaborative efforts in promoting dialogue and conflict resolution.
The Security Council meeting concluded with a call for continued dialogue between the UN and the LAS. Member states reaffirmed their commitment to supporting both organizations in their mission to uphold international peace and security.
