The Press and Public Affairs Section is in charge of administering the Mission’s and its leadership’s strategic communications and public engagement. The unit communicates Somalia foreign policy to the general public using traditional and social media, as well as public outreach events both domestically and internationally in conjunction with the Somalia Permanent Representative’s staff.
The Press Section maintains ties with important international, national, and local media outlets, as well as the UN press corps, and provides media advice to the Somalia Representative and other senior Mission officials. The division is in charge of the Mission’s extensive social media outlets.
The division also maintains ties with a number of foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and advocacy organizations in the Public Diplomacy sector to ensure the NGO community understands Somalia’s perspectives on multilateral issues. The section organizes public events and speaking engagements for the Somalia Representative and SOMALIA-UN officials to highlight Somalia’s foreign policy accomplishments for students, educators, and think tanks in collaboration with the academic community. The division also takes advantage of New York’s cultural scene to organize engagements that educate UN audiences about Somali society and culture.
