New York, December 21, 2025 – Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, delivered a powerful statement at the United Nations Security Council, outlining his country’s remarkable progress in the fight against terrorism and emphasizing the importance of global cooperation. Speaking at the session dedicated to combating terrorism in Africa, Minister Fiqi presented Somalia’s experiences as a model for regional and international efforts.
Minister Fiqi expressed gratitude to Algeria for hosting the meeting and commended the United Nations for its leadership in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism. He noted that terrorism continues to endanger international peace and stability, particularly in Africa, and called for united action to counter this global menace.
Somalia’s progress in reclaiming territories once controlled by the extremist group Al-Shabaab was highlighted as a testament to the power of resilience and collective action. Over the past three years, Somalia has liberated vast areas, restoring governance and stability in regions that were previously under militant control.
The minister outlined Somalia’s three-pronged approach to counter-terrorism.
- Military Operations: Coordinated efforts between Somali forces and international partners have played a crucial role in neutralizing terrorist strongholds and reestablishing law and order.
- Financial Disruption: Somalia has frozen approximately 500 illicit accounts linked to terrorism, effectively cutting off critical funding channels for extremist groups.
- Ideological Countermeasures: The Somali government has hosted national conferences to combat extremist narratives and promote a correct understanding of Islam, countering the exploitation of religion by terrorist organizations.
Minister Fiqi stressed that while military victories are essential, addressing the root causes of terrorism—poverty, unemployment, and socio-economic despair—is equally critical. He lauded the international community’s commitment to sustainable development in Africa, particularly the allocation of $163 billion in 2024 to support stability and growth across the continent.
The Foreign Minister also called for continued support for African-led solutions, underscoring the importance of regional collaboration in addressing shared challenges. He emphasized that Somalia’s partnership with the African Union and the United Nations has been instrumental in achieving the country’s counter-terrorism successes.
Minister Fiqi concluded by affirming Somalia’s commitment to fostering a secure and stable future. “Our successes demonstrate what is possible when determination, resilience, and international solidarity converge,” he said.
The session underscored Somalia’s significant strides in counter-terrorism and its role as a regional leader in combating extremism, offering hope for a more secure and peaceful Africa.
