(New York – January 20, 2025) In a sideline meeting towards strengthening Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, held a bilateral meeting with Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. The discussions focused on peacekeeping efforts, stabilization, and future collaborations between the two nations.
During the meeting, Minister Fiqi acknowledged Slovenia’s support for United Nations Resolution 2719, emphasizing its importance in advancing Somalia’s peace and security agenda. He highlighted Somalia’s ongoing offensive against ISIS in the southern regions and the liberation of several cities from Al Shabaab. “We are focused on regaining control and stabilizing newly liberated areas, and our efforts have yielded significant results,” said Minister Fiqi.
Training Somali police and peacekeepers was a key point of discussion. Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi emphasized that rebuilding the police force is central to Somalia’s stabilization process. He noted that five police stations had already been established in various districts, with support from international partners, including the European Union and the United Kingdom. “The UK has implemented impactful projects in these areas, contributing to the rehabilitation and construction of schools and other infrastructure,” he added.
Slovenia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s stabilization efforts and confirmed receipt of a formal communication passed on to the Slovenian Prime Minister. Both parties explored avenues for quick-impact projects to aid newly liberated areas, such as rebuilding schools and improving public services.
The conversation also turned to global collaboration. Minister Fiqi highlighted Somalia’s participation in the E10 group within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and sought Slovenia’s insights on strengthening multilateral ties. The Slovenian counterpart expressed interest in deepening cooperation and shared details about the annual “Africa Days” event held in May, inviting Somali ministers to participate. Additionally, an official visit to Slovenia by Somali leaders is being planned to foster stronger bilateral relations.
This meeting underscored Somalia’s determination to build international partnerships to ensure long-term stability and development. With continued support from allies like Slovenia, Somalia is paving the way for peace and progress.
