United Nations, New York – January 15, 2025 – Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, has made a powerful appeal for heightened international efforts to address the ongoing crisis in Yemen. Speaking on behalf of the A3+ group—comprising Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and Somalia—Ambassador Abukar Osman emphasized the urgency of achieving a Yemeni-led political settlement and addressing critical humanitarian and security challenges.
Delivering his remarks at an A3+ meeting, Ambassador Abukar Osman expressed gratitude to UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg and OCHA Assistant Secretary-General Joyce Msuya for their updates on the Yemeni crisis. He reiterated the group’s unwavering support for United Nations-led initiatives and regional mediation efforts, particularly those driven by Saudi Arabia and Oman, to foster a balanced and inclusive peace process.
“The involvement of women and youth in Yemen’s political future is indispensable for resolving the conflict and realizing the aspirations of its people,” Osman said, emphasizing the need for unity and sustained commitment to a peaceful resolution.
Ambassador Abukar Osman condemned the arbitrary detention of humanitarian workers and United Nations personnel by Houthi forces, calling for their immediate and unconditional release. He highlighted recent attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, including a deadly drone strike in Taiz province, as violations of international law and a hindrance to peace efforts.
The humanitarian crisis in Yemen remains dire, with nearly half the population facing severe food shortages. Osman called for urgent international funding to support the Humanitarian Response Plan, warning that without immediate action, millions will suffer from acute malnutrition and emergency-level food insecurity.
The statement also raised alarms over Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, which threaten global shipping and the marine ecosystem. The A3+ called for an end to such activities, stressing the broader risks these actions pose to regional and international stability.
Ambassador Abukar further criticized external military interventions, including Israeli airstrikes in Yemen, and urged all parties to prioritize diplomacy over conflict. “Military actions only exacerbate tensions and undermine efforts toward peace,” he said, calling for restraint and constructive dialogue to resolve the crisis.
He concluded by stressing the importance of achieving an immediate and permanent ceasefire, not just in Yemen but across the region, as a foundation for lasting peace. “Diplomatic efforts must lead the way; Yemen’s future depends on it,” Abukar stated, reaffirming the A3+ group’s commitment to supporting a Yemeni-led peace process under United Nations auspices.
The Ambassador’s call to action comes at a critical juncture, as Yemen’s humanitarian and security crises demand focused and sustained international engagement.
